Feeling tired all the time? Struggling with energy, even after a good night’s sleep? You might have low iron.

Iron deficiency is common in women, especially during pregnancy, after heavy periods, or due to dietary factors. It can lead to anaemia, making your body work harder to carry oxygen, which leaves you feeling exhausted and foggy.

If oral iron supplements don’t work for you — or if your levels are critically low — your doctor may recommend an iron infusion. This is a safe procedure done in-clinic, where iron is delivered through a drip directly into your bloodstream. It’s faster and more effective than tablets for some people.

The procedure typically takes less than an hour, and most patients feel a boost in energy within a few days. Iron infusions are generally safe, though like any treatment, they come with small risks. Your GP will assess if it’s right for you.

If you’re feeling drained without a clear reason, book in with your GP and ask about checking your iron levels.
