How We Can Help

Iron is essential for transporting oxygen throughout your body. When levels are too low, you may experience fatigue, weakness, or shortness of breath. For patients who are unable to take iron supplements or need rapid replenishment, an iron infusion can help restore iron stores more effectively.

What is an iron infusion?

An iron infusion is a procedure where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a vein. A small needle is inserted into your arm, and iron is slowly infused over approximately 15 minutes. After the infusion, you will remain at the clinic for monitoring for another 30 minutes to ensure you are feeling well.

Who might need this treatment?

An iron infusion may be recommended if:

  • You cannot tolerate oral iron tablets or liquid
  • You have not responded well to oral iron
  • You need to restore iron levels quickly
  • You are managing chronic conditions such as kidney disease or heart failure

Your doctor will assess whether this treatment is appropriate for your health needs.

What to expect

Before your iron infusion appointment, you will have a standard consultation with one of our GPs. This allows your doctor to review your symptoms, recent blood test results, and medical history.

If suitable, the doctor will explain the risks, benefits, and process. You will then be booked in for the procedure on a separate day.

Risks and side effects

Iron infusions are generally safe, but like all medical procedures, there are some risks to consider. Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Skin flushing or rash
  • Temporary changes in blood pressure or heart rate

Less common side effects include:

  • Skin staining if iron leaks outside the vein
  • An anaphylactoid reaction (a rare allergic response)

Please speak with your doctor to discuss any concerns or questions before proceeding.
